Why DIY and "Sanitizer Fogging" Don't Work
You can't bleach mold out of porous flex duct or fiberglass ductboard, the spores live inside the material. Spraying disinfectant into the system without first physically removing the colony is the most common scam in the industry. The mold returns within weeks because the food source and moisture are still there.
The Right Removal Process
- Inspection, visual + borescope through register openings, plus a check of the coil, drain pan, blower, and any insulated duct interior.
- Source identification, find the moisture problem (oversized AC, missing condensate trap, leaking coil, attic humidity) and fix it. Cleaning without this step guarantees regrowth.
- Containment and negative air placed on the entire system.
- Mechanical removal with rotating brushes, compressed-air whips, and HEPA-vacuum extraction.
- Coil cleaning with no-rinse evaporator coil cleaner.
- Replacement of contaminated materials, heavily moldy flex duct or ductboard sections must be cut out and replaced; encapsulation alone fails.
- EPA-registered antimicrobial applied as a final step (not a substitute for removal).
- UV-C light installation at the coil to prevent regrowth (optional but highly effective).
