Even with plastic sheeting and zip walls, drywall dust, sawdust, and silica from a renovation make their way into your HVAC system. Every time the air handler kicks on during the project, that fine dust gets pulled into the return and deposited along the entire duct run. Once construction is done, it stays there, recirculating into your living space for years if you don't clean it out.
What Ends Up in Your Ducts After a Remodel
- Drywall dust (gypsum): ultra-fine, easily inhaled, irritates lungs and sinuses.
- Sawdust: wood particles plus any treatments and finishes used.
- Silica dust: from cutting tile, concrete, or stone, a known carcinogen.
- Insulation fibers: fiberglass and cellulose particles.
- Paint and solvent VOCs that adsorb to dust on duct walls.
- Construction debris: nails, screws, and drywall chunks pulled in through unprotected returns.
Why "We Sealed the Vents" Isn't Enough
Even with vents taped, dust escapes around the edges, through gaps in floor plenums, and through the return, which most contractors don't seal because it would shut down the AC. Once the system runs again, anything in the supply trunk gets blown through your filters and into the home.
When to Schedule the Cleaning
- After final construction cleanup but before move-in for whole-home remodels.
- Within 30 days of project completion for kitchen, bath, or addition remodels.
- Immediately after a flood or fire rebuild, coordinate with our water damage or fire damage teams.

Health Note
