5 Things NOT to Do After Water Damage in OKC

April 23, 2026Reviewed by ASAP Pro Restoration Team IICRC-Certified Technicians

What you avoid in the first hour after water damage matters as much as what you do. These five common mistakes cost OKC homeowners thousands in additional damage, denied claims, and health issues every year.

    1. Do Not Wait to Call

The single most expensive mistake. Mold can begin growing in 24 to 48 hours. Hardwood cups within hours. Drywall wicks moisture upward at about 1 inch per hour. Insurance carriers expect prompt mitigation, delays can hurt your claim. Call a certified restoration company immediately, even before you file your insurance claim.

    2. Do Not Use a Household Vacuum on Standing Water

Standard shop vacs and household vacuums are not rated for the volumes involved in real water damage and can cause electrical hazards or motor damage. Worse, they leave moisture behind in the carpet pad and subfloor where you cannot see it. Professional truck-mounted extraction removes 10x more water.

    3. Do Not Turn on Ceiling Fans, Lights, or HVAC in Affected Areas

Wet electrical components are a fire and shock hazard. Running your HVAC distributes contamination throughout your home, especially with Category 2 or 3 water (see our categories guide). Wait for a professional assessment before powering up anything in the affected area.

    4. Do Not Move Wet Items to Other Rooms

We see it all the time, homeowners moving soaked rugs, books, or upholstered furniture into dry rooms to "let them air out." That spreads contamination, transfers moisture into previously dry materials, and turns one damaged room into three. Document items in place, then let restoration handle the pack-out.

    5. Do Not Sign with the First Storm Chaser at Your Door

After major weather events, out-of-state crews flood Oklahoma City. Many use high-pressure tactics, ask for upfront cash, or have you sign over your insurance claim before any work is done. Look for IICRC certification, local OKC presence, in-house equipment (not rented), and direct insurance billing experience. Read our how to choose a restoration company guide.

Bonus: Do Not Throw Anything Away Before Documenting

Insurance needs proof of loss. Photograph damaged items including model and serial numbers, then pile them in the garage rather than the dumpster until the adjuster has reviewed. See our full insurance claim tips.

    What to Do Instead

Stop the source if you can do so safely (main shut-off), call a 24/7 IICRC-certified restoration company, then call your insurance carrier. Document everything with phone photos and video.
