Wind Damage Roof Inspection in OKC: What to Look For After Every Storm

April 23, 2026Reviewed by ASAP Pro Restoration Team IICRC-Certified Technicians

Oklahoma City averages dozens of severe wind events every year, and most homeowners only call us after water is already coming through the ceiling. By that point, the roof has typically been compromised for weeks. A 10-minute post-storm inspection from the ground can catch wind damage early and protect your insurance claim window (usually 1 year in Oklahoma).

    Wind Damage Threshold

Asphalt shingles are typically rated for 60 to 110 mph winds, but rating assumes proper installation, age, and undamaged sealant. In real Oklahoma conditions, sustained winds of 50 mph or gusts over 60 mph can lift shingles. Damage often is not visible from the driveway.

    Ground-Level Inspection Checklist

    1. Walk the Perimeter

Look in your yard, driveway, and gutters for shingle granules (they look like coarse dark sand) and small shingle pieces. Granule loss is the #1 sign of wind or hail damage.

    2. Look for Lifted or Missing Shingles

Use binoculars from the ground. Wind typically lifts shingles in patches, especially along ridge lines and edges. Even partially lifted shingles have broken sealant and will leak in the next rain.

    3. Check Flashing

Around chimneys, vents, and skylights. Bent, lifted, or missing flashing is a near-guaranteed leak source.

    4. Inspect Gutters and Downspouts

Detached, dented, or sagging gutters indicate wind force, and clogged gutters back water under shingles.

    5. Look at Soffit and Fascia

Loose or missing soffit panels expose the attic to wind-driven rain.

    Inside the House

    6. Check the Attic

Bring a flashlight. Look for daylight through the roof deck, wet insulation, and water stains on rafters.

    7. Inspect Top-Floor Ceilings and Walls

New stains, bubbling paint, or musty odors. See our ceiling water damage guide.

Why Even "Minor" Wind Damage Matters

A single lifted shingle exposes the underlayment to UV and rain, leading to deck rot within a season. One unsealed shingle can also unzip an entire row in the next storm. Insurance pays for prompt repair under most policies. Waiting can be classified as "neglect" and reduce or void coverage.
