A negative-air machine pulls room air through a three-stage filter (pre-filter, activated carbon, medical-grade HEPA). The clean air is exhausted outside the containment zone. Two outcomes: airborne particle counts drop, and the contained area stays at negative pressure so contaminants can't escape.

- Fire and smoke restoration: required during soot vacuuming and odor neutralization.
- Sewage / Cat 3 water: required during structural cutting.
- Trauma and biohazard cleanup: required for the entire scope.

How to Verify the Right Equipment Is On Site
- Ask for the make, model, and CFM rating. Reputable units: BlueDri AS-550, Phoenix Guardian R, Dri-Eaz DefendAir HEPA 500.
- Ask for the HEPA certificate of analysis. True HEPA filters 99.97% at 0.3 microns.
- Ask how many air changes per hour the contractor is targeting. The answer should be 4 to 6.
- Ask whether they'll perform post-remediation verification (PRV) before tearing down containment.
